A quick Google search for PrayforParis (2.2 million hits) where 130 people were killed in a terror attack is all it takes to understand that hypocrisy of western protests at injustice. A further search for PrayforSyria where hundreds of thousands have been killed so far; and more continue to be killed each day, elicits 355k hits. It’s quite simple: If it doesn’t happen to me or to people I care about or identify with either through religion, skin colour, culture or location, then it really doesn’t matter all that much.
This Women’s March in response, in part, to the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States is a case in point. It was a movement of staggering hypocrisy.
Across the world women are abused, down-trodden, harassed, murdered and mutilated. In parts Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, South America; women are second-class citizens. They are treated as commodities and trophies. There was no Women’s March against the treatment of these women, because they’re not white or westerners; yet millions will turn out to protest the election of a wotsit-faced sex criminal.
In Africa, 45.6% of women will suffer physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives. There was no Women’s March for these women; yet hundreds of thousands across the world turned out to protest the inauguration of a chimp-faced tiny-handed imbecile.
Approximately 6000 girls around the world have their genitals mutilated every day. There is no march for these women; however protests occurred worldwide in major cities at the swearing in of a slack-jawed pussy-grabbing orangutan as the 45th President of the United States.
I am not suggesting that the protest was not worthwhile, even if one or two self-confessed ‘sweary liberal feminists’ riled against me for claiming that there were better ways to defeat a legally elected official (organise, research, campaign and defeat him in 2020). Instead I’m asking that you look beyond your borders at the travesties committed against women and men across the globe. I’m, asking you to look at the atrocities carried out in Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, Chad, Iran, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon, Mali and Egypt; not just in Boston, New York, Quebec, Paris and London.
Protest ill treatment, protest inequality, but be equal in your protest. Don’t be a hypocrite. You are not the centre of the universe.
