Resident Evil is one of my favorite video game series. Resident Evil 4 is actually my favorite video game of all time. I was very excited when the Resident Evil 4 Remake was announced and so far in 2023, it is my game of the year. However, I must admit, I was a little disappointed that it was not Resident Evil: Code Veronica that got the remake treatment.
Capcom has nailed it with the Resident Evil remakes they have done, all the way back to the GameCube with that first remake they did! Resident Evil 2 is one of the greatest remakes of all time and I think they did a good job with Resident Evil 3 as well, although just like back in the day, Resident Evil 3 was not as impressive as 2 was. If we go back to 2000, it was Resident Evil: Code Veronica that made me decide to get a Sega Dreamcast. I even picked up Resident Evil: Code Veronica X on the PlayStation 2 and then the GameCube when it was released.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica is in terms of the story, Resident Evil 3 as it actually follows on from the events of Resident Evil 2. It was such a massive game back when it was first released, the leap in presentation from the PlayStation to the Dreamcast was huge. I loved the game, it was hard as nails and I did have to restart after getting to the plane with no ammo and no herbs to take on the Tyrant, but it was still one of if not the best experiences I had on the Sega Dreamcast in the two years I was in love with the console before the PlayStation 2 stole my heart!
With Capcom remaking the older Resident Evil games, Resident Evil: Code Veronica needs it more than Resident Evil 5 does! The rumors are that it will be 5 that gets the remake treatment next. I have my own thoughts on Resident Evil 5 and that is perhaps a topic for another time. However, I will argue until I am blue in the face that Code Veronica needs it more. Capcom re-released Resident Evil 5 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and visually, it holds up rather well. Code Veronica on the other hand, even the “HD” version that they made during the 360 era, feels like a relic of the past.
Code Veronica has a great, deep, and engaging story, but the voice acting and the cut scenes that are in it do not do it justice the way that it deserves. The other Resident Evil Remakes look phenomenal and I would love to see the story of Code Veronica told in that same way. Yet as well as a huge visual upgrade, I think that Capcom could make some major quality of life changes too. The engine we have for Resident Evil now is great and I think making Code Veronica a bit more action packed would be cool. It is one of the harder Resident Evil games, mainly because ammo is so scarce. To be honest, that is something I like about it, but it letting us go a bit more gun-ho is something I would like to see.
What are your thoughts on a Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake? Do you want that next or would you rather see another Resident Evil game given the remake treatment?
