Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League: Preview!

I Love DC, I did a ranking of the Arkham Series a while back and Arkham City is even one of my favorite games of all time so I was interested to see what Rocksteady had in store next. I had the chance to spend some quality time with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and wanted to share my thoughts on it. I was able to play through a chunk of the first part of the game, all the way up to the boss fight with the Green Lantern which was where my time with the game came to an end. With that in mind, I am talking about a version of the game that I am sure was still being worked on so please keep that in mind.

Let me start with the positives. I love the story, the idea of Brainiac taking over The Justice League and having them do his bidding as he takes over the planet is great stuff. A section of the game I played had me in a Batman museum as a crazed version of Batman stalked the Squad. It was awesome and when the story is in full swing, it is impossible not to be pulled into this world. As a matter of fact, when my time with the game came to an end, I was most disappointed with not seeing what happened next in the story. If you love DC, you will love the story being told here I am sure.

I also think that the game looks great. While the Batman museum I was just talking about was dark and brooding, many of the areas I explored were bright and allowed you to fully see everything. The characters look great and the different costumes are a lot of fun and if I do get into the game, I think that collecting different costumes may be something I get hooked on. The voice acting is great as it always is in these DC games, they all sound believable and while I did hear some of the same quips more than I would have liked, for the most part, I liked the banter between the characters.

Let me say that while I was very negative in my Batman Arkham Collection review on Nintendo Switch. I for the most part have enjoyed all of the DC games over the last decade or so. I am one of the few people who even had fun with Gotham Knights. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League though, feels like it is just too much. I get that this is a live service game, but there are so many numbers, so many different types of loot and weapons that you can get, not to mention skill trees for each character, it all felt like an overwhelming experience for me. Granted, I am old and for the Fortnite generation, this may be great and addictive, but I have no interest in playing a game with a great story like this, that just wants me to do the same thing over and over again to move up on some kind of battle pass type system.

The actual gameplay is solid, I found running around the city to be fun, all of the characters controlled well and they do feel different. I preferred playing as the more athletic Harley Quinn, but I did also have fun doing massive damage as King Shark. I am sure with a group of friends all working together, communicating, and having fun, this will be a blast. However, playing this with random people was not fun in my experience, we all just sort of did our own thing, making me want to just play it on my own.

I was going to pre-order Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but the time I spent with it actually turned me off doing this. It is not a horrible game to play, but all the live service stuff that surrounds it does nothing for me at all and makes me not want to jump into this. If I could play through the epic and fun story that they have crafted here, have fun, maybe do a new game plus, get some new stuff, that would be awesome. However, I have no interest in a story driven game that wants to keep me hooked with its live service shenanigans. Maybe 6 to 12 months down the line if they change their ways with this and get rid of the live service stuff, I will pick it up.

Those are my thoughts on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, what do you think about this game? Do you have it pre-ordered? Did you cancel your pre-order? Or, do you have zero interest in this game at all? Be sure to let me know in the comments section.

  1. Like you, the live service element turns me off. I’d looked this over with some interest but I was on the fence on whether to dive in. I enjoy story-rich not grind.
That said, persistent updates and new content do add longevity to a title. What was it about the service you didn’t like the feel of? Was it repetitive gameplay to achieve the ‘next level’ or something else?

    1. You hit the nail on the head there! Doing the same thing over and over again to get more loot starts to get old really quick Especially when a game is so on the nose about it like this one is. Such a shame too, I loved the story and the presentation of it and would have liked to have seen where it all went. However, the grindy looter shooter gameplay has gotten to the point where it is just old and not fun for me anymore.
