With the trailer for Transformers One causing a bit of a stir, what better time than now to look at the top 5 Transformers games. As a kid of the 80s I loved The Transformers and to be honest with you, when I did My Top 5 PlayStation 2 Games List, Transformers (the game based on Transformers Armada) came so close to taking the number 5 spot on that list. Getting Metroplex for Christmas back in the 80s was one of my best Christmases ever and to this day I feel that the 96 Transformers movie has the greatest soundtrack in the history of cinema…. I am dead serious about that by the way!
There have been more than a few good Transformers games over the years and after consulting with the Headmaster, Brainstorm, I have put together what I feel are the top 5 Transformers games.
Number 5
Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark
When I first got my PlayStation 4 I did not have a ton of money during the first year or so of having that console so mainly had to make do with the PS Plus games. However, the very first game I saved and made an effort to buy was Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. I feel that this is an underrated game! It blends the Michael Bay live-action Transformers movie universe with the Cybertron video game universe. I really enjoyed the story here, but the crazy thing about this game is that this was the Escalation mode. This was the online mode and I was so hooked on it! You and three other players would team up to fight off hordes of enemies! As crazy as this will sound to some, this was one of my most played multiplayer games on the PlayStation 4!
Number 4
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Far too many people write, Transformers: Dark of the Moon off because it is based on the less than fantastic 3rd live action movie. Also, the first two movie Transformers games were ok, but not great. However, Dark of the Moon is actually made by the same studio that gave us the two Cybertron games. What I liked about this game was that it not only was a solid 3rd person action shooter when you were in robot mode. When you were in vehicle mode, you could enter a battle mode and it would then control kind of like a first-person shooter (all be it, still in the third person) and you felt like you had some real firepower. I played through this multiple times on the Xbox 360 and I think that it holds up really well. It is sure as hell way better than the third movie which is just a hair above The Last Knight (I hated what they did to Hot Rod!) for being my least favorite of the Michael Bay Transformer movies. This is a true hidden gem and I highly recommend you give it a chance, especially if you were put off by the first two movie games.
Number 3
Transformers: Devastation
Transformers: Devastation is what happens when those crazy guys and gals at Platinum Games get their hands on the Transformers license. This is a love letter to us old school Transformer fans. It is as close to being in the G1 Universe as you can get. It tells a fantastic and super fun story with epic voice acting, but it is the over the top action that makes this so much fun. Plus, this is easily the best looking Transformers game ever made! I played this on the PlayStation 4, but from what I have seen, every version of this looks spectacular. It has that classic Platinum Games fast-paced hack and slash combat. There are epic boss battles and it makes some great use of the various Transformers that you can play as abilities too which are a blast to use!
Number 2
Transformers: War for Cybertron
To say that I was blown away by Transformers: War for Cybertron is a massive understatement! This game is epic in every sense of the word! Taking place on Cybertron, we have the civil war between the Autobots and the Decepticons and you get to experience the story from both sides! Missions let you pick which character you play as, which changes the dialogue slightly as you play! It is a fantastic 3rd person shooter that has some great action scenes and it makes very clever use of the Transformers vehicle modes too! Also, the part of the game where we get to see Trypticon is one of my all time favorite moments from that generation of gaming. This was a very clever and cool take on the G1 Transformers universe. While Devastation was more authentic to G1, this I liked because it had the G1 roots, but put its own spin on it.
Number 1
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
If War for Cybertron was number one, you had to have known that Transformers: Fall of Cybertron was going to be number one. Truth be told, this could have very easily made My Top 5 Xbox 360 Games List! This took what the first game did and improved upon it in every way as far as the gameplay goes. Having Grimlock and the Dinobots as part of this game was so awesome! The way you could actually transform Grimlock into his powerful T-Rex mode was incredible! It has a very dark story and there is less “hope” here than in the game that came before it in my opinion. While I would certainly not argue with anyone who says they prefer the story in War for Cybertron. I feel that the gameplay improvements here and the inclusion of the Dinobots make this a better game for me personally. It really does suck that Activision has never managed to give us some kind of remaster of this and its predecessor!
Thanks for checking this out, the very first Transformers game I ever played was actually all the way back in the ZX Spectrum! I do want to give an honorable mention to the Transformers: Human Alliance Arcade Game as well as the Nintendo DS game that was based on Transformers: Animated which was an action puzzle game that was a bit like the classic Lost Vikings!
Also, just for fun, my ranking of the live action Transformers movies (86 will always be the best!) goes like this,
Transformers
Bumblebee
Transformers: Age of Extinction
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Transformers: The Last Knight
Now before you Transform and roll out, I would love it if you could let me know what your favorite Transformers games are in the comments section!
