I have already talked about my top five Spider-Man games and today we are looking at my favorite X-Men games. The X-Men was the very first comic book I got back in the late 80s, I loved the animated series and the movies and to this day they are a firm favorite of mine when it comes to Marvel. With X-Men 97 and Deadpool 3 releasing later this year and Wolverine from Insomniac on the horizon, there is no better time than now to talk about The X-Men.
As always, this is my personal list, if yours is different, be sure to let me know what your top five X-Men games are in the comments section down below.
Number 5
X-Men: The Arcade Game
I am sure this would be higher for some people as it is such an iconic game from Konami, but to be honest, I think Konami has several better arcade games! Do not get me wrong, I still spent a fortune playing this in the arcades back in the day and when it was released on the Xbox Live Arcade back in the 360 days it was amazing so it is a game that I still really like. Based on the animated special Pryde of the X-Men, this is a cool beat-em-up that makes you feel like you are playing through a cartoon. It looks and sounds awesome too! If they had released the Arcade 1Up of this here in the UK, I would have been very tempted to pick it up.
Number 4
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse
I love the two X-Men games that the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis got (check out my top five Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games) however, I feel that this offering from Capcom on the Super Nintendo is a better game. This is a beat-em-up, but it has a bit more depth, You can pick which X-Men character you want to play as first with each one having their own stage. You can do the standard walk right and fight stuff, but the characters have special moves that are done with button combinations, similar to a fighting game. While it is not officially based on the 90s X-Men animated series, to me this always felt as close to it as could be.
Number 3
X-Men: Children of the Atom
While I had this on the PlayStation so I had the inferior version of the game, I still loved this awesome fighting game from Capcom. You could argue that X-Men vs Street Fighter is better, but this list is just about X-Men so get over it. This is a fantastic one on one fighting game that has characters with big sprites, the animation is amazing and the game moves at a blistering pace. The AI can be a tad cheap, but it is still a very fun experience and one that I spent many hours mastering back in the day. It might have a relatively small roster compared to the Capcom fighters that would follow it, but that just made me actually want to try out every character.
Number 2
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition
I am specifically talking about the version that came out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 here! This was a superhero game unlike anything else I had played before and still to this day! The Wolverine game for PS2, Game Cube, and Xbox is good, but this is so much better. You will be shocked at just how bloody and violent this game is, they did not hold back at all and Wolverine can hack and slash his enemies to death with his claws. The game is not just style over substance as it is a fun 3D action and adventure game that I really wish would get some kind of HD remaster one day. If you have passed this one by over the years as the movie is not that great, I highly recommend you give this a try, just make sure it is the Uncaged Edition!
Number 1
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse
The X-Men Legends series was what came before Marvel Ultimate Alliance and the first game is solid, but this sequel is where it is at. We get a fantastic story here with Apocalypse causing all kinds of mayhem, so much so that The X-Men must team up with the Brotherhood to try and stop him. We have an excellent roster of characters here with some awesome CG cutscenes that tell a fantastic X-Men story. It is a dungeon crawler kind of game where you have a party of four that you can switch between. The console versions of this are great (I have it for the GameCube) however, it was the PlayStation Portable where I put a ton of hours into this!
So there you have it my top five X-Men games, to be fair, there are several more that could have quite easily made this list so I could have done a top ten! Until then I leave you with a “SNIKT” and suggest that you leave your own top five X-Men games in the comments section down below bub!
