I love horror and I love video games and when the two come together and it clicks, it is awesome. I have not talked about horror video games on here as much as I would like, but I did talk about how good the 2010 Splatterhouse game was! Anyway, the recent State of Play revealed that there was going to be an updated/enhanced version of Supermassive Game’s masterpiece, Until Dawn. It had been leaked earlier in the week, but it was still cool to see it was actually true.
The trailer does not really show much. As much as I love Until Dawn, when I first heard the rumor that this was a thing I was thinking “Does a PlayStation 4 game really need a PS5 remaster?” Then I remembered that I literally bought The Last of Us Part II Remastered about a week ago so perhaps I should just shut my mouth. In all seriousness, I think that Until Dawn holds up, granted it is not all that old, but the PlayStation 4 version of the game still looks fantastic!
With them using actual actors and mo-capping most of it, it really does make you feel like you are in a horror movie. It is the story that is the best part of Until Dawn. A group of way too attractive young people head to the mountains for a break, a year after a tragic event that saw two twins die while they were in this same mansion in the mountains! I know it sounds about as cliché as you can get and when the killer shows up, it certainly feels that way. However, Until Dawn has a really cool twist that I did not see coming, and if you have not experienced the game, I am not going to spoil it for you and I recommend you do not read up on it.
The game lets us play as various characters throughout the story, It is a “make a choice” kind of game, but the choices you make can radically alter the way things play out. From characters getting killed to different people being in different scenes. It makes it a game that is fun to play through and it can be quite challenging to try and get as many people to survive as you can. You often have to make split second decisions and this can be very stressful, but that is all part of the fun.
Until Dawn is awesome and I think that this version which is coming to PC as well as PlayStation 5 is the best way to experience it. It has been rebuilt using the Unreal 5 Engine which has seen the character animations as well as the general presentation be kicked up a few notches. As I said, this was already an incredible looking game so the fact that they have managed to make it look even better is awesome. There is this new 3rd person camera thing that they have talked about too which is going to make it even more cinematic by letting us get more up close and personal with certain parts of the game.
I have to admit that when it comes to a game getting remastered for the PlayStation 5 there are far more that I would have said needed it over Until Dawn (where the heck is my Resistance collection Sony?) however, this is a truly awesome horror experience and one that I am more than happy to jump back into. If you have never played the game before, I highly recommend that you do when this comes out later this year.
What are your thoughts on there being a PS5 and PC version of Until Dawn? Are you excited about it or do you feel it is pretty unnecessary? Be sure to let me know in the comments section.
