Unveiling the Terror of ‘From’: All You Need to Know

The inaugural season of “From,” a sci-fi horror drama created by John Griffin, made its debut in February 2022. Despite being an underrated series, it garnered substantial critical acclaim, leading to its renewal. The second season, also receiving praise from both audiences and critics, has been available on streaming since April 23, 2023.

The series unfolds within an eerie and enigmatic Middle American town plagued by nocturnal monsters. Its unfortunate residents are trapped in this forsaken place, unable to escape under any circumstances.

Plot: The nameless town depicted in this horror series captures and dooms its inhabitants as night descends. A hapless family finds themselves trapped here, desperately trying to devise an escape plan while contending with the gruesome monsters lurking in the woods every night. The suspense, gore, and violence in this thrilling series keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The show’s official logline states, “Unravel the mystery of a city in the middle of the U.S.A. that imprisons everyone who enters. As the residents struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy and seek a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest.”

Cast and Crew: The series features a talented ensemble cast, including Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster, Ricky He, Chloe Van Landschoot, Corteon Moore, Pegah Ghafoori, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Elizabeth Moy, and Avery Konrad in prominent roles. “From” is a co-production between Epix Studios and MGM International Television Productions, with John Griffin serving as a co-producer alongside Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner, renowned for their work on “Lost” (2004-2009). Executive producers include Josh Appelbaum, AndrĂ© Nemec, Scott Rosenberg from Midnight Radio, Anthony and Joe Russo, and Mike Larocca from AGBO, as well as Lindsay Dunn.

Critical Reception: Ben Dowell of The Times (UK) gave high praise to the first season, stating in his Rotten Tomatoes review, “It is beautifully shot, and the horror feels distinctively American… It also had its chilling moments, when you’re not fuming about the inelegant dialogue, haphazard structure, and investing in characters who then just die.”

James White of Empire Magazine acknowledges that the first season bears some resemblance to “Lost” but finds plenty of entertainment in “From,” even if it occasionally feels more generic than its inspirations.

Meagan Navarro, a top critic on Rotten Tomatoes, regards the second season as equally terrifying as the first. She describes it as having “full-throttle pacing, incredibly high stakes, enigmatic horrors, and an immensely talented cast exploring the murky grey areas of morality,” making it one of the most thrilling horror series not to be missed.

Will there be a From season 3 on MGM+? Stay tuned to find out.
